Bunnies and Duckies and Bears – Oh My!

The North Coast Men’s Chorus participated in the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony April 17th of Providence House’s Prentiss Wellness Nursery. This Wellness Nursery is safe place for children in crisis with medical needs and forms of developmental disabilities, whose parents maybe struggling to cope with their children’s medical care, possibly challenged with homeless or unsafe living conditions.  Providence House spoke to their appreciation, support and donation.

The pictures reflect what a wonderful gift we gave these children in crisis with medical needs. The goal of the Wellness Center is to provide needed services to at least 100 children within the first year of opening.  The North Coast Men’s Chorus presented these children with 100 stuffed animals to help them feel more comfortable and to provide them something to hold on to that will stay with them through their time in the Center.

The ceremony was hosted by Natalie Leek-Nelson and her staff, the Board represented by Duane Bishop, Jr., Board Chair and Vice President and COO of Forest City Enterprises. Sister Hope Greener, C.S.J. Providence House Founder, did the Opening Prayer and there were many members of the community present. Some of the speakers at the ceremony were Armond Budish, Cuyahoga County Executive, Joe Cimperman, Ward 3 City Councilman. The closing of the ceremony with the ribbon cutting was with a blessing for the Wellness Nursery by Pastor Allen Harris, Franklin Circle Church who spoke of the children and what a blessing it was to serve our community in the care of these children.

NCMC will continue to support Providence House as we have in the past with “Deck the House” and in some of the Mardi Gras events raising funds to support their Mission. In the future the Chorus hopes to support an outdoor clean up and landscaping day.

NCMC Performs for 20th Annual “Deck the House” benefit

On Tuesday, December 8, 2015, the North Coast Men’s Chorus had the privilege of performing at the 20th Annual “Deck the House” benefit auction.  This annual event raises money to support Providence House, a crisis nursery located in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood.  This year’s event hosted nearly 1,000 Providence House supporters in the spacious City View Lounge of FirstEnergy Stadium, home of the Cleveland Browns.

NCMC has been the featured entertainment for this event for the past six years, helping Providence House supporters to get into the Christmas spirit and especially the spirit of giving.  This year, NCMC performed an hour of music from the past weekend’s sold-out NCMC Unwrapped concerts at PlayhouseSquare’s Hanna Theatre.  Attendees were treated to lush gospel, upbeat jazz, classic carols, and even dancing snowmen!  Natalie Leek-Nelson, President and CEO of Providence House thanked the Chorus for, “adopting the babies and children of Providence House as their own for so many years.”

Providence House is one of the nation’s longest operating crisis nurseries among the 70+ in operation in the US and Canada today offering emergency shelter and care to children who are actively at risk for abuse and neglect due to family crisis. More than a shelter for at-risk children, the agency offers holistic services for children and their families including education, mentoring, case management and aftercare focused on family preservation.

42nd Cleveland International Film Festival

We are pleased be a Community Partner at the 42nd Cleveland International Film Festival. This year we are sponsoring the film A Moment In the Reeds. Show dates are Friday, April 6 at 9:05 PM and Saturday, April 7 at 11:35 AM at Tower City Cinemas.

On holiday from his studies in Paris, Leevi returns to his family’s summer cottage in Finland to help his father, Jouko, with renovations. Jouko is a bitter man, unreconciled to his wife’s death and to his son’s sexuality. Hired worker Tareq, a Syrian refugee trying to forge a new life, also arrives. Jouko is suddenly called back to the city for business. Distrustful of foreigners he leaves Leevi to supervise, but things take an unexpected turn. A MOMENT IN THE REEDS unfolds like a summer flower. It drifts placidly along on a current of natural beauty and eroticism. As Leevi and Tareq share their hopes and their bodies, the film lets us intimately observe every lovely and telling moment. But Jouko may return at any time. If he discovers their relationship, his anger may shatter their sudden happiness. A MOMENT IN THE REEDS artfully reveals the clash of cultures and dreams that transpire during this summer idyll, one that will alter their lives forever. (In English and Finnish with subtitles) -C.R.

As a Community Partner, the North Coast Men’s Chorus is able to offer our members and patrons $2.00 off each ticket purchased for any movie or short subject being shown during the duration of the Film Festival.
